How to Configure Purchase Limit Validation

Some POS integrations do not natively enforce state compliance purchase limits through the e-commerce storefront. Purchase Limit Validation within the Rank App allows you to define legal sales limits so customers cannot (or are warned before they) place orders that exceed your state's purchase restrictions. When enabled, the system evaluates the customer's cart before checkout based on the limits you configure.

 Before You Begin

Ensure you know your state's current cannabis purchase limits, including:

  • Total purchase limit
  • Unit of measure (grams, ounces, milligrams THC, etc.)
  • Any category-specific limits (Flower, Edibles, Concentrates, Vape, etc.)

Enable Purchase Limit Validation
  1. Log in to the Rank App.
  2. Navigate to EcommercePurchase Limits.
  3. Enable Purchase Limit Validation.

Once enabled, configure the settings below.

Configure Enforcement Behavior

We have pre-configured different States regulatory limits. To use these pre-set limits, click on the drop-down to select the available option, then click "Load Preset"

To configure the limits manually, use the steps below.

The Enforcement setting determines what happens when a customer attempts to exceed the configured purchase limit.

Select one of the following options:

Block Checkout (Recommended)

Customers cannot proceed to checkout until their cart complies with the configured purchase limits.

Use this option when you want to strictly enforce legal purchase limits before an order is submitted.

Allow with Warning

Customers receive a warning that their order may exceed legal purchase limits and that items may need to be removed in-store before the purchase can be completed.

Choose this option if your staff will review compliance during fulfillment.

Allow

Customers are allowed to continue through checkout without any warning, even if their cart exceeds the configured purchase limits.

This option is generally only recommended when purchase limits are managed entirely by your POS or in-store staff.

Configure Missing Data Behavior

Some products may be missing the weight, potency, or THC information required to accurately calculate purchase limits.

The Missing Data Behavior setting determines how these products are handled.

Choose one of the following options:

Block Checkout

Customers cannot complete checkout until the cart contains only products with sufficient compliance data.

Allow with Warning

Customers receive a warning that some products could not be validated and that adjustments may be required before completing the purchase.

Allow

Products without sufficient compliance data are allowed through checkout without any notification.

Configure the Total Purchase Limit

The Total Checkout Limit defines the maximum amount a customer can purchase in a single transaction.

Enter:

  • Total Checkout Limit – The numeric purchase limit.
  • Total Limit Unit – The unit of measure associated with the limit (for example: grams, ounces, or THC milligrams).

Example:

Setting Value
Total Checkout Limit 28
Total Limit Unit Flower Equivelant (Grams)

Configure Category Overrides

Many states have different legal purchase limits for different product categories. Category Overrides allow you to define these category-specific limits.

Add a Category Rule
  1. Under Category Overrides, click Add Rule.
  2. Enter a descriptive Rule ID (for example, Flower Limit or Edibles THC Limit).
  3. Select the product categories the rule should apply to.
  4. Enter the Category Cap, which is the maximum allowed quantity for those categories.
  5. Select the appropriate Cap Unit.

Repeat these steps for each category that requires its own purchase limit.

Configure Fallback Equivalent

Some POS providers supply only a category cap value (such as THC milligrams) but do not provide the equivalent flower weight needed for purchase limit calculations.

The Fallback Equivalent setting allows you to define a conversion value that the system can use when the provider does not supply a direct flower equivalent.

Configure this value only if your POS integration requires it and your compliance regulations support the conversion.

Once finished making changes, click save at the bottom of the page.

Example Configuration

Setting Example
Purchase Limit Validation Enabled
Enforcement Block Checkout
Missing Data Behavior Allow with Warning
Total Checkout Limit 28
Total Limit Unit Flower Equivelant (Grams)

Best Practice

For the most consistent customer experience and strongest compliance controls, we recommend:

  • Purchase Limit Validation: Enabled
  • Enforcement: Block Checkout
  • Missing Data Behavior: Allow with Warning (or Block Checkout if complete product data is consistently available)
  • Configure Category Overrides whenever your state enforces different limits by product type.

This configuration helps prevent customers from submitting orders that exceed legal purchase limits while providing clear guidance when adjustments are needed.
